# Set up an automation rule

> Step-by-step guide to creating, testing, and publishing your first automation rule in Risponse, from picking a trigger to adding conditions and actions.

This page walks you through building one rule from start to finish. The example sends an automatic reply when a message contains the word "price".

## Before you start

* Decide what you want to happen, in one sentence.
* Make sure you have permission to manage automations. See [team access and roles](https://docs.risponse.com/features/team-access-and-roles.md).

## Create the rule

**1. Open automations**

Go to the automation rules area in your workspace.

**2. Start a new rule**

Click the button to create a rule. You can build from scratch or begin with a ready-made template if one fits.

**3. Name it**

Use a clear name, like "Reply to price questions". Your future self will thank you.

**4. Choose the trigger**

Pick the event that starts the rule. For our example, choose the one for a new incoming message.

**5. Add conditions**

Set the filter. For our example, add a condition that the message contains "price". Add a delay if you want the check to happen later.

**6. Add actions**

Choose what Risponse should do. For our example, send a reply with your price list. You can attach a file if needed.

**7. Save and publish**

Save the rule, then publish it to turn it on.

## Test it

Send a message from a different phone to your connected number. Use the word "price". Check that the reply arrives and that nothing else unexpected happens.

> [!WARNING]
>
> Do not test on real customers. A broken rule can message many people quickly.

## Edit or turn off a rule

Open the rule from your list. You can change it or switch it off at any time. Changes only affect new events. Messages that already arrived are not processed again.

> [!TIP]
>
> If two rules react to the same message, both may run. Keep your conditions specific so rules do not clash.
